“Water for life - LIFE for water” - Bruxelles, October2009

The RBA (Dr. geologist A.Cisotto) partecipated to the conference for the LIFE-Water Projects.
The LIFE Unit of the European Commission organized a conference in Brussels on 14 to 15 October 2009 to facilitate the dissemination of the results of LIFE projects concerning the water issue. The event, entitled "Water for Life - Life for water" has involved over 100 guests, including beneficiaries of LIFE projects, national and international planning and management of water, NGOs, media and other key stakeholders.

The European Community has set an ambitious target of achieving good ecological status of all rivers in Europe by 2015. The main tool for achieving the objectives are the WDF river basin management plans, which should begin to be published in 2009. As projects are contributing to the implementation of the Water LIFE WDF, the results represent a valuable source of knowledge and information.This conference sought to share this with major stakeholders and to ensure that the discussion is useful in the future implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (adopted in 2008).


The conference has focused its attention on four main themes of water:
  • Session A.1: Adaptation to climate change - how can an intelligent management of water resources to help combat water shortages
  • Session B.1: hydromorphological disorders - such as technical assistance in the rivers may be related to ecological re-river?
  • Session A.2: The Marine Strategy Framework Directive - as proven techniques for collaborative governance can contribute to the implementation of MSFD?
  • Session B.2: Eutrophication - how can you deal effectively diffuse sources of nutrients and other point sources?

LIFE projects (already completed) presented at the conference were chosen to highlight best practices, innovative solutions and ongoing challenges in the four main themes identified by the conference and in different areas of Europe 'in order to facilitate' identification of the results of interest to EU policy, replication and exchange of good practices on water protection.
